Ellis Island Scientific Discoveries

Geology: Foreign rocks. The rocks were placed by humans. Larger amount of sandstone, it dissolves quickly in water changing the land more rapidly.

Human Impact: Changes in path material. Rocks were placed by humans. It’s a man made bird sanctuary. Gravel road, two different plants on sides of roads. Gravel is closer to the water because it’s more durable were the wood chips are farther from water and are cheaper. In the pond there were water fences with Asian carp in the water around the fence. Man made bird post to welcome other birds.

Chemistry: The water on this site was very basic and had a level 10 on the ph scale. The soil had low nitrates, low potassium and medium phosphorus.

Zoology: Asian Carp were jumping out of the water. We heard frog and saw many big crickets. But there were no birds.

Botany: We saw prickly cactuses. The site had areas of mainly vegetation, plains and forest. There was a wide diversity in the plants.

Meteorology: Some areas were 100 degrees, humidity was 100%. Walk for feet closer to river 85 to 75 degrees.

Data Analysis: Diversity between plants and animals, plants grew in different patches, lots of asian carp, not much human impact.
